Music is my life. Suggest an album and I'll probably review it. Track by track.
To kick us off, I'll review the One Direction album since they're so hot.
#1: Up All Night - One Direction
Now I'm cool with pre-packaged pop boy bands just like anybody else. But I don't know where I was when these 5 British/Irish lads took over the world. They seem more liked than Justin Bieber, because hey, they can actually sing. But they definitely still get the same level of hate by those who don't like 'em. So are these boys worth all the commotion they're stirring? Well let's find out.
Track one - What Makes You Beautiful
The hit that got us all singing. It's your average self esteem boosting & "guys are sweet omfg" single that is total bait for young teenage girls. I'm an insider with this when I tell you girls eat this kind of stuff up. They did the same with Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" & Justin Timberlake's "Senorita" a while back. It's a song to tell girls they're fine the way they are and to give them expectations for boys to be as sweet & accepting as presented in this song. So basically it's a song to make girls think the members of the group are perfect due to the lyrics they were told to sing. It's catchy & seems like a good tune to sing along with friends, but lyrically it lacks. I mean smiling at the ground? Flipping hair? That's a stupid thing to point out when admiring your girlfriend. You could use the whole "Little things matter" argument for this one but no. It didn't even rhyme all that well in the song. But the catchiness & the boys' voices save it, even though the lyrics get a bit redundant.
Track two - Gotta Be You
Oh no! The boys aren't so perfect here...right? This song is about wanting a girl back and telling her they're the only one for them. It sorta-kinda hints cheating on the boys part I guess with the line "...what a mess I made of your innocence." but I guess not really. The biggest area where this songs suffers in, is the boys trying to hit notes they obviously can't hit. It's SO obviously autotuned. Plus the lyrics just seemed a bit lazy imo.
Track three - One Thing
This is actually one of my favorites on the album. It's about telling a girl that she has that special thing that is making them crazy. I think song is catchy & the lyrics ain't that bad either, they're actually clever at points. Unlike the other songs on the album, it makes people realize there aren't just two singers in this five piece band. It's not too autotuned & shows each boys singing capability. It only really suffers due to the weak bridge. I mean come on, it's just a bunch of "Ooooooh woahhhhh" repeating & like two lines from the chorus.
Track four - More Than this
Again with the overuse of autotune. They're trying to show off singing capabilities that the boys don't quite have yet. It does distribute singing parts to all the boys though, which didn't always happen in the album. The Irish fellow probably sounded the best on this track, but the British-Pakistani one did sound alright too. The bridge is a lot better on this, less lazy. But there's a line with such blatant autotuning my goodness.
Track five - Up All Night
I like this one too. It's appropriately cheesy yet ridiculously catchy. It's about partying all night long...but as wild as it'd be for a nine year old. There's not really a bridge either, my god these people are lazy. There's one line that makes me giggle and it's "Katy Perry's on replay!" Really? You're singing about partying all night & Katy Perry's at the height of your shenanigans? Lyrics from her such as ones that compare you to a plastic bag probably got you feeling like a badass. One of them even talks about how he doesn't care about a table breaking! How wild is that? Table probably costed quite a few bucks but he don't give a shit! They try to incorporate the whole "girls are woooondaaaahful" theme that's all in this album but that was unnecessary. It was just thrown in. Like they thought "Hey, we didn't make sure the guys appreciate girls well enough so let's put in a line about telling a girl she's the one in this!" Other then some stupid lyrics, the song is a like.
Track six - I Wish
This song isn't very memorable. It's like a pre-What Makes You Beautiful song. It's about the boys having some crushes. The chorus has a line that says "When I see you with him, slow dancing, it breaks my heart." Oh no! Slow dancing! Cause that's casual. When the hell were they in a dance? It doesn't even hate on the "other man" in this song like it should. The bridge sucks once again. In fact this song mostly has lyrics that are repeated cause it's lazy.
Track seven - Tell Me A Lie
This song is okay. Just okay though. It's badly corny. It's about them denying being left by their girlfriends so they exclaim "If he is the reason you're leaving tonight, spare me what you're thinking, tell me a lie." It doesn't distribute parts to all the members enough. I don't see why this is a popular song on the album. AGAIN the bridge is pretty lazy.
Track eight - Taken
I really do not like this song. It's about having an ex want you back because they're lonely, basically. The lyrics are just stupid and it's frustrating. "It's like I'm finally awake, and you're just a beautiful mistake" What the fuck? The bridge is pretty good, but their voices kinda take a pop-punk direction and it's sorta weird.
Track nine - I Want
I like this one. It's about being frustrated with girls who want a lot of material things. The lyrics are pretty stupid though. The chorus consists of "I want I want I want (to dance crazy) I want I want I want (and that's not me) I want I want I want (to be loved by you). The bridge is pretty good though. Basically, the song is like Gold Digger by Kanye West for nine year olds.
Guitar solo is pretty weak. That may just be my metalcore listening self speaking though.
Track ten - Everything About You
I like this one a lot. It about being very faithful to you girl & treating her right, then they explain why. It's a fun dance track, the lyrics ain't too bad. It's distributes singing parts well. There's actually a bridge in this. All in all, I was perfectly content with the song & I can see the appeal.
Track eleven - Same Mistakes
This song isn't very memorable either. Song is basically about relationship problems. It has the same generic sound of the other ballads on this album. The lyrics are alright though. Doesn't do a good job with giving out fair parts though. There actually sorta is a bridge on this one, but it sucks.
Track twelve - Save You Tonight
I'm divided on this track. It isn't horrible, but I just don't really like it. It's about being the knight and shining armor to a girl basically. Lyrics are whatever. Bridge is miniature in this one.
Track thirteeen - Stole My Heart
I do not like this song at all. It has the whole douche-y Enrique Iglesias sound to it. Ick. To it's defense, I can imagine it being a good dance track. But in the generic and overplayed JLO type of way. It's about being quite smitten with a girl. There's a pretty good bridge. But again with the overuse of autotune with something that isn't there. The parts aren't distributed well either.
Now since I'm too lazy to review the bonus tracks (which has a song about suicide, oh joy) that's it. The album wasn't a failure, it just seemed a bit too packaged & generic at points. One Direction didn't really disappoint, but didn't greatly amaze me either. It did a good job at being fun & good for it's audience, I can see how young girls are sucked in.
