Today, March 14, we have three things. First off, the time change, which is as retarded today as it was when Congress passed it some 60-odd years ago. Also, today is Pi Day, 3/14, when the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter is celebrated. Let's get the joke out of the way now.
Q: What do you get when you take the sun and divide its circumference by its diameter?
A: Pi in the sky by and by
There. Corny Pi Day joke: check. And finally, possibly the one thing more people care about then the other two, today is Selection Sunday for the Division 1 Men's NCAA Basketball Tournament. At 6 o'clock Eastern Time tonight, CBS will air the 65 teams the Tournament Committee has selected to compete. Three hours after, the 32 National Invitation Tournament teams will be announced on ESPN.
And I'll get my take on the NCAA and NIT selections done here. Automatic bids to the NCAA tournament make it harder for teams who deserve to get in to get in. The NIT is mostly made up of NCAA tourney snubs that could have made it if automatic bids were wiped out. If you're gonna send your conference champion to the Big Dance, send your regular season champ, like the Ivy League, who doesn't even have a postseason league tournament. They only serve to wear down teams who are gonna make it and put undeserving teams in when they pull off an upset or two. Make the postseason tournaments for NIT bids if the postseason champ won't make it to the NCAA tournament on their regular season merits. The top NIT teams every year would have been contenders had automatic bids to the NCAA tournament never been made. We don't need a tournament expansion. We need automatic bids gone.
