Yeah, sometimes wonders happen. I'm doing a second playthrough, want to get all the timestones. My thoughts of the game:
Graphics - good. The designs make the game feel like Sonic 2 from parallel universe - themes from the first game were continued, but in a different direction from real Sonic 2. There are lots of colors, even though I sometimes wish there were more.
Controls - awesome. Super Peel-Out is an awesome move and the motorbike Spin Dash is unusual.
Music and atmosphere - I don't know about you, but Japanese soundtrack... kinda sucks. Don't get me wrong, it's full of awesome tunes, but they don't fit the levels really well. Bad future don't really feel that bad. Contrast, much darker american soundtrack. I mean... man, Quartz Quadrant, Bad Future... man... And, the game with Japanese soundtrack feels just wrong. It doesn't feel like Sonic. It feels too Japanese. Sonic was always made for western audiences.
Intro and outro - really damn awesome. I wish they could provide them in such quality back in the day on the real Sega CD. Oh well, hardware limitations and stuff.

I played Taxman's remake on Steam. The only complaints I have about it is that
    1. You can't change the controls
    2. Intro and outro lag for some reason.
I used the Sega-CD oddball spin dash and smooth filter. As you can already tell, I played with the NA OST.

...now for the bad stuff. There's only one drawback in that epicness - the final boss is rather underwhelming and anticlimactic. Still, it doesn't carry the game to the bottom, like such things do with some modern games *cough* Mass Effect 3 *cough*, it still remains awesome.

I think I've only beating Sonic CD once. It's a god game, but I don't like it as much as the originals for some reason I can't figure out.

Love this game but I didn't play the new version.
My major complaint about probably be the level design being a bit of a mess at times.

And I like the Japanese soundtrack a little more, but probably because it is closer to what I listen to elsewhere at times. I do like many songs in the US soundtrack. My fav probably being Tidal Tempest present...

While I liked Sonic CD a lot, I do feel it is a bit overrated, for I prefer the modern games (Unleashed, Colors and Unleashed) and the other original classics over CD. Sonic CD does have its good parts, nonetheless.

I liked sonic CD, the first one blew my mind when I played it, but that's when I was in 5th grade

Then I heard about the rerelease and cried tears of joy
I got the news Tails was playable and made a waterfall

Wait, what? Tails is playable in the rerelease?

Well anyway, I liked it but I think the level design and past/future stuff make it not on the same level with Sonics 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles.

Its surprising, since I beat the game like twice with Sonic and twice with Tails (the remake of course.) All of this beatings came with all time stones. The secret is, when you're almost failing at a special stage, quit and get back to your save. Its like the retry button in Sonic 4!

Most of the cool people die early.

But the oldest ones don't die; they just fade away and become nothing at all.

Congrats on your conquer of the games. Quite frankly, I think this is one of the best Classic Sonic games of it's time. The fun is only added to with the addition of Tails.

I have to strongly disagree with the statement made about the music. Honestly the Japanese soundtrack is far more superior than the US soundtrack in which most songs are boring on the US soundtrack. Looking pass that, Sonic CD is tied with Sonic 3K as my favorite Sonic the Hedgehog game. I love that you can explore each level, and I love the time travel gimmick. All in all you have about 72 levels to explore, making it one of the largest Sonic games to date. I've never collected all the time stones before, I just travel to the past and destroy each machine. :P I currently have the Taxman version downloaded on my computer and my 360. xD I also own the original Sega CD version too.
