They can't easily bring up a time where he smiled or focused on something unrelated to his mission probably. If his background story weren't so freakishly devestating then maybe I could see a bright smile on his face.

It's his sense of justice and fairness I suppose. He was accepted help from Amy and it would seem that Silver wanted it so in return he agreed to help her find who she was looking for first.

He also refused to harm Amy, even though she was the only thing between him and (what he believed to be) the source of all of his problems, he couldn't bring himself to harm an innocent. Now if this were Shadow, he probably would have just killed them both, even if he didn't need to.
