I remember Michael Jackson in Space Channel 5--that was a fun game (kinda silly, but overwhelmingly fun).

About S3, if that was the case, would there not be some massive media blitz about his involvement with the game by the time it was released? I don't quite remember hearing anything about that at the time--not to mention that he's not in the credits in the game.

I actually heard about this quite some time ago. He was supposed to create the soundtrack for Sonic 3, but due to the child molestation charges placed against him at the time, his name was removed from the credits. Though, apparently some of his assistants or another section of his staff were within the credits.
