We knew this game was going to be a monster when it was announced a year ago, but no one expected it would be this big. The latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise shattered industry sales records – and became the biggest event in the history of any entertainment medium – with a sell-through of $550 million in the first five days.
That’s 40 percent better than the box office 5-day record (currently held by “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”) and a $50 million improvement over the previous title-holder, Grand Theft Auto IV.
It’s a sure bet the game will top $1 billion in retail sales worldwide, putting it in the same club as Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and James Cameron’s “Titanic.” That's some serious company.
