Fox vs. Kitsune
As we all should know, Tails is a fox. But it wouldn't be the first time Tails has been compared to the kitsune. Despite that, what you rather he be and why?

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
Kitsune, because that would make him special and explains his smartness.
Too bad Tails isn't cunning/manipulative.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
Fox, because we don't need to go into any fancy names, even if it fits him more. Like if there was some mystical name for an hedgehog that runs fast, we don't need to call Sonic that.

Yeah, I think fox is better as well. His design may have been inspired by the kitsune, though it feels more at home with 'fox'.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
I reckon Tails is more like a kitsune I must admit, but I'm just happy with him being known as a fox, it's simpler that way.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
Funny that you mention this because in my current fanfic series, I'm fleshing out the differences between a fox and a kistune. IMO, Tails should be known as just a fox because it fits him far better.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
Isn't a kitsune a fox anyways? He can still be a kitsune even if we call him a fox. Maybe Sonic is an African Pygmy Hedgehog, but why get so specific. Anyways, not everyone outside Japan knows what a kitsune is.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
A Kitsune is a sort of Japanese magical deity, if I remember rightly. They also have magical abilities based on the number of Tails they have.
With that in mind, I'd say he was a fox with an extra tail as a mutation. Aside from having that second tail and utilising it for flight, he doesn't have any extraordinary physical abilities.

Agreed 100%
I have always envisioned Tails as just a mutated fox with no extraordinary backstory as to why he has two tails. People need to take caution with certain characters and where the origins of their details come from. Those details might not be what they're cracked up to be, and they might not sit well with some people.

Maybe it was a birth defect, because the mom was drinking.

LOL
A mutated fox is usually what people conclude when they see Tails. Unless they have prior knowledge of this kitsune gobbledy-gook, then they're not going to assume anything else. At the very least, this does make a very interesting debate, so I'd like to read other opinions on this subject.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
Kitsune is like calling Sonic Sonniku.
Fox is the American term, and I'm American.

Re: Fox vs. Kitsune
Now I get it! Thats why people who write fanfics describe him as "Foxkit"
