I think this is the first time I have written a full length review, so bear with me as I possibly suck at this.
PS3 Version of Sonic Unleashed.
Presentation/Graphics
Lets face it, this game looks gorgeous. The different settings of the game are all beautiful and the architecture of the buildings and such look great. Graphics sure are pretty, that's for sure, and the lighting of the game is great too. The cut scenes look like Pixar movies, like the beginning and end ones, amazing. My gripe about the presentation of the game is the framerate and loading times. The framerate is noticeably bad in the Spagonia hubworld at night, at Adabat, and in some places in between. Werehog's movement seems to be clunky when he moves sometimes and it definitely is noticeable. Don't get me started with Adabat in the jungle, I didn't think it was that bad, but I was like "Oh wow." The loading was pretty awful at times too. It loaded after everything. It even needed loading time between the cut scenes in the end of the game, which really took away from the fluidity of the film-likeness of the game before and after perfect dark Gaia. The loading was pretty bad ingame, and something that bothered me was in the hub worlds when you accidently would hit the hourglass, then loading screen, then you have to hit the hourglass again, for another loading screen. This would happen very often with me as Daytime Sonic, but anyway.... I blame homing attack for that and me being stupid by pressing everything.
Sound
The game sounded nice in addition to its looks. The music for the most part was very up-beat for Sonic daytime levels and a smooth cruise for night time. The music seemed to fit with the continents that you were in and were very wonderfully arranged. One thing that I did like about it was that there weren't any songs with vocals while you were playing the game, that was just perfect. One very minor problem with the music for me was battling enemies with werehog and that jazz theme appears, but after three or so levels you get used to it. For the most part the music was very good. The voiceacting seemed to be kept to a minimum, which was cool too, and there seemed to be an improvement in Sonic's voice (At least I think so) from recent Sonic games. His voice wasn't a roller coaster like it used to be a while ago. Chip's voice wasn't too bad either. The sound effects while playing the game were standard, rings and boost. It was a bit annoying that Sonic would randomly say something after you did a boost, like "Woohoo" or "Oh yeah" or something like that.
Plot/Story
Alright, I'm keeping this one short. Plot was VERY simple. My nine year old brother understood it. I believe that if Sonic games were to have any plot at all, it should be done like this. Its simple and lighthearted with no drama at all. New character Professor Pickle added a bit of comedy into the story. For the most part it was executed well and it's good enough for the younger kids to understand. It was a bit corny, especially after you found out more about Chip, but it was cute and it IS a Sonic game, after all....
Gameplay
DUN DUN DUNNNN. I'm dividing into three sections, Day, Night, and Hub, Hub being first.
HUB WORLD
As daytime Sonic, you run a bit Slow. In the smaller hub worlds, I didn't really mind, but in the hubs like Spagonia where you need to run it was a little frustrating. In Night, same thing, but to a lesser extent, I believe you're actually faster than day Sonic o_O. Anyway, there are these other parts in the hub world where you pass the big floating circle with the sun and moon on it and you enter a new field. You can run SUPER fast and you have all your attacks. It's like a 3D level without being timed and you move around at your own pace destroying enemies and collecting whatever you find. Through here is where you get to the actual acts in the continent, and believe you me, these are my favorite parts of the Hubs. The lame thing about the Hub Worlds are the citizens. You can talk to them if you want, but they don't do anything at all, and they might give you something every now and then but for the most part they are useless and completely optional (unless you want all achievements/trophies, in that case have fun talking to them) but at least they give you the sense of life in the town.
DAYTIME SONIC LEVELS
These levels are the most insane and intense in the game. Sonic goes really fast, and I mean REALLY fast, it's hard to see what come up next, and you won't know what's coming unless you pay complete attention to the screen. Scream SONIC GAME all over it. There are a lot of different mechanics in the daytime levels, like drifting, shifting sides with the l1 and r1 buttons, jumping from pole to pole, wall to wall, dashing in the air. Everything needs precise jumping and movement to get you your S rank. There are many paths to take and the sun/moon medal collecting depends on this a lot. The bad? Pretty much the fact that you can miss a lot in the level if you don't pay complete attention, it might get frustrating. The quick time events also detracted a bit from the experience, but for the most part the daytime levels are what a lot consider to be the best Sonic has gotten lately.
NIGHTTIME SONIC LEVELS
To be honest I liked Werehog *Bricked* I mean, I thought he was pretty fun, not too bad. I never really played a brawler before so I'm no connoisseur on the subject of beat em ups, really, but for a first time I liked it. The combos add to the fun if you do them correctly and the platforming segments are too. Like, inside the clock tower in the Spagonia Night Stage, that was fun. My only problem with Werehog in terms of gameplay were the amount of enemies you had to defeat.... that's a brawler, I guess? There were times when you defeated a butt-load of monsters, then more robots appeared, and when you think you're done even more appeared, and more appeared. I remember this happened in Eggmanland, Mazuri, and Spagonia right off the bat. The collecting segments as Werehog was nice too.
OTHER
I didn't know where to put in the medal collecting, lol. Medal collecting was alright until you got to Adabat. Ok, it went something like this: From 10 to 20, from 20 to 30, to 30 to 40 keep on going till around 70, then all of a sudden, BAM you need like 30 medals to go to adabat, 120. (It seriously didn't go like that, but the intervals were pretty equal until Adabat, basically) and that took some while to collect. It was a cheap way of elongating the game a bit for the final part of the game. So yeah, problem there :/ The game also gets progressively difficult, especially around the middle of the game.
THE RESULT.....
I APPROVE. If you are a Sonic Fan that didn't buy this game, go buy it, and you'll be very happy.
Tl;dr
+Pretty Game, from cut scenes to just the levels in general with picture-perfect places
+Sonic Day Stages are a must for future 3d games
+Story and Music are simple but fit the series and environments perfectly.
-Framerate :(
-Werehog can be a bit too much sometimes
-Medal Collecting
-Loading screens.
FINAL SCOREEE.....
4/5 Seriously the best game I played in a while (I was in a major game Hiatus in the past year). Great step in the right direction for the series but far from a perfect game.
Sorry if it was crappy review :Oh No:
