It's hard to tell, being that I'm not a fortune teller or prophet.
Hm...... I say yes, I don't see any reason why he would be going away.

I reckon he will. Like sykog77 said, I don't see any reason why he'd be going away, to me Sonic just seems to be getting more popular, what with more merchandise being produced and that.

Which is precisely why we need Platformers--if all we get are FPSes then there will never be any choice, and games will copy each other everywhere, leaving no room for anything different. And if nothing is different, then it may mean that interest in video games will decline.
As for Sonic, yes, I believe he'll last. There's always something coming in the Sonic world, and there's always something to make people aware of him (e.g. the Alton Towers ride). A series which establishes itself is bound to have lasting impact.

Mario survived for 20+ years, and Sonic will to next year.I believe he may die after 10 more years, but not 20.

I don't think Sonic will continue for 20 years but if there comes a time soon where sonic games are finished, then I want them to finish in style...with a sonic game where they actually put a stop to Eggman but refer to him as Robotnik throughout the entire game :P

I have to agree with that. All I see on the PS3 and XBox consoles are mostly filled with nothing but FPS's(Modern Warfare 2, Halo ODST, Borderlands, Dead Space, Uncharted) besides fighter-oriented games like Tekken and Street Fighter, or even Soul Calibur. Whether or not Sonic games are a bit mixed on reception, you have to admit, it takes a fresh turn with it's platforming wiles. It looks to me like Wii and DS have more variety, though the PSP also has some cool stuff.

Looking at the list of Xbox 360 games, there are 83 games identified as first-person shooters, and 115 action/adventure games (which somewhat blurs the line of what is strictly a "platformer"). (*This also includes games which were canceled or yet to be released). It's one thing to recklessly generalize, but I draw the line at recklessly generalizing and saying this is how it is for everyone. The world isn't split up into FPSes and nothing. Personally I've been losing interest in FPS games since Halo 3.
Sonic is still getting exposure, which means that there is a consistent audience for him. What I enjoyed most about Sonic and still do to this day is that the games and character have an identity all their own, never afraid to be unique in a world that is chock-full of muscle-bound "heroes" and guns-guns-guns! You don't need "hardcore edginess" to succeed, you don't need blood, nudity and profanity to be taken seriously (some games that I know that do that, such as Prototype, are very silly and yet take themselves extraordinarily seriously). I've heard the argument since the advent of Goldeneye and Resident Evil that M-rated, "hardcore" games are the wave of the future, and I reject that notion. They're fun, most certainly, but their appeal is more than just putting heads into crosshairs and pulling triggers, and I believe that a game with nothing but endless killing would be banal (just hold down the trigger and you win after five minutes--nothing to it).
All you need is fun.

Yes. He's literally lived through worse. Sega is getting him to be quite popular, and the games are getting better. Unless Sega blows it somehow, he'll live for quite some time.

I agree with TFF. Sonic lives forever!

No matter how much the moronic Segaling peons hate Sonic, the majority of them will still play unless Sega does something ludicrous. (And when I say ludicrous, I mean at least five times worse than '06 in terms of story and so bad by modern standards I can't even express it in terms of gameplay.) So, my answer is as follows: Yes. Sonic will almost surely live a great while longer.

As long as there are fans, there will be games.
