What does reputation mean? Mine is 1, is this good or bad? Why did I achieve this rating?

Reputation is a system where users can like or dislike another user's post. Sorta like the thumbs up or thumbs down for youtube videos.
You can't tell who gave you the thumbs up or thumbs down, but you can tell which one of your posts was given the rating (either a green bar or a red bar will be present top right of your post.. or both, if it has been given a like and a dislike).
To "like" a post, click on the '+' located top right on any post- except your posts of course xD... to dislike, click on the '-'.
In your profile, we can also see how many +'s and how many -'s you've given and how many you've received, but we won't be able to tell who you gave/took away the rep from :o (under statistics).
There's also an option to hide the dislike button and only keep the + to stop haters xP (although that requires template editing >.<).
After reading above, to answer your questions: it's obvious someone liked one of your posts and decided to give you a +1 rep :). So yeah that's a good thing xD

If your posts have been rated at all, a bar will be displayed top right of the post. The bar will be colored according to how much rep your post got...
So say, your post got two positive reps, and one negative rep, the bar will be colored two thirds green and one third red.
If your post got no negative reps, and all positive reps, the entire bar will be green. However, you won't be able to tell how many points exactly your posts has earned (since it's 100% green)- you can see a total of how many + reps and - reps you've gotten and given in your profile though.
I think it can be edited to add a number instead of bars (to see how much rep each post got exactly). I've never tried it before though :P

If a post isn't labeled with a green or red bar at the top right hand corner then it's not rated + or -... additionally, you can't see reputation if you're logged out.
The thanks button depends on how the admins set it up to be.. I think here on TSC thanks equals 3 rep points... so if you click on the thanks button (only available to the person who made the topic), you're giving the respondent to your topic 3 rep points.... :)
(The topic maker can only give 1 thanks to 1 respondent per topic)
