If this is the case, why does Sonic the Hedgehog collect rings? I know that, game-wise, they keep him alive and protect him, give him more lives, and to access secret levels(not to mention they add to your score); however, why does he collect them if you don't consider the gaming factors? It's not like hedgehogs need to be rich.

Why Rings?
I was thinking of how games are made, and how you look for things to collect. Mario gets coins, which sounds normal for him(because, he wants money; Being a plumber doesn't grant you the most moo-lah, although I'm pretty sure rescuing princesses on a daily basis probably does). You use the currency you get to buy things in most common RPGs, like the Final Fantasy games, Chrono Trigger/Cross, or Breath of Fire IV. There's actual real-world reasons for collecting these items.

No, plumbers can make so much money, what do you expect from people having to be fixing the stuff you destroyed.

True, and you might even get a great story out of it.Supersonic84 wrote:SonicFanPS2 wrote:Being a plumber doesn't grant you the most moo-lah

Because the rings grant him health and life force? Same reason why you don't die when you possess a ring as opposed to having none.

Well, for one, how are the rings imbued with this power in the first place? And if that is the case, why wouldn't Eggman make use of this power?
Also, why does it have to be rings? That's kind of the question I'm trying to ask.
And then there's also the idea of rings as currency...

I agree, and I apologize to all the plumbers worldwide.

Re: Why Rings?
Actually, Ivo has tried using rings for his own means, and not just in SA2B. He's even let enemies get powered by rings.

Re: Why Rings?
Here's something that may make things easier or more confusing: Rings are connected to Lives, Lives are connected to Checkpoints, Checkpoints are connected to Special Stages, and Special Stages are connected to Rings.

Actally Special Stages connect to Chaos Emeralds then to Super Form then back to Rings.Hushimo wrote:The Freedom Fighter wrote:Here's something that may make things easier or more confusing: Rings are connected to Lives, Lives are connected to Checkpoints, Checkpoints are connected to Special Stages, and Special Stages are connected to Rings.

If the by connected back to rings, you mean by super sonic draining rings, then I agree.

Re: Why Rings?
I believe the rings had something to do with the concept of Madonna (Sonic's girlfriend designed for the first game), but even when Madonna was dropped the idea of collecting rings stayed.
I think the rings were meant to be collected for her or something.

Actually, they were made by Nate Morgan as a 'green' source of energy in the Archie comics. Sonic's Uncle Chuck was one of Nate's students.
