Is it gay to play as a female character in a game if you're male, and vice-versa?

I don't really think so. Take Portal, for example. You have no choice but to play as Chell.

Maybe you just want it to make the game play more fun. I've made plenty of guy characters in Animal Crossing. I don't really see it as gay as long as you don't always do the opposite gender.

Why would any man chose male?
Do you like staring at a guys' ass for hours?

I talked to a friend of mine, who is a behavior analyst, about this same subject a while back, and I didn't get any concrete answers. She said that it's unusual for males to want to portray themselves as females, but in games where heavy character customization is available it allows people who have a fetish for dressing up women to realize their fantasies. Of course, that whole fetish theory falls apart at the character customization stage, and extended play as a female character in a game like Oblivion or Fallout isn't exactly dressing up.
Since that discussion was merely based around the behavior of someone we knew, the conversation never really turned towards women who use male characters.
As for my own thoughts, considering that the character in the game is your avatar, and you're given the choice, you are choosing to take on the role of a female as opposed to a male.
I wouldn't say it's gay to pick females, although I wouldn't be surprised if someone who usually willingly chooses a female character to portray themselves has some latent gender-identity issues.

I don't think so. Its just a player character. Gender is really not important.
