I'd arranged them sorta-chronologically in my head,* and just decided to stop at one point. I also decided to leave characters that aren't in the official in-game canon out because I'm terrible at recalling the horribly confusing details of the multiverse of comics, television shows, ...

*Eggman is before Sonic, before anyone yells at me. Yes. He was thought of first, as a pitch for the main character, then put away in development. Then they finally pinned down Sonic for his first game, and threw in Eggman as the villain. Eggman was created before Sonic, everything you know is a lie, blah blah blah.
