Post by elseb September 5th 2012, 5:35 pm

Hello, i was just wondering whether it would be possible to have a choice of themes, i'm not really keen on the current one, i'm sure i'll be on my own with that but i just think there a few other Sonic forums that look better. I think i'm not that big of a fan of the huge banner.

Not complaining though, great forum. Just a little suggestion. :)

We've tried doing that before, there were some issues with it. It could, probably not, come back sometime.

That is an interesting concept, that's for sure. It seems like something the admins could test out sometime in the future. I don't think it would be done anytime soon considering the admins currently have a lot on their plates.

There's a mod that lets one allow themes to be switched by the end user for Forumotion boards.

... Zez once described it as like "leprosy for Forumotion." Let's never do that again.

Solution for everyone who doesn't like the theme on this site or any site at all: Firefox + GreaseMonkey. Replace the CSS with whatever you want client-side. Or if you're too lazy to learn the minimal amount of GreaseScript that would be required to do that, use CustomizeYourWeb, which can do the same thing with a user interface. You just have to learn CSS. Too lazy to learn CSS? Go die in a fire; I say you have no right to complain about the theme unless you've got an inkling for what went into its creation.

Give me the option to switch back to the old theme and I'll be happy.

Not really the right attitude to have when you're trying to improve the member count on the forum, it's up to the owners of the forum to try and reach out to as many different members they can. I completely understand what you're saying about CSS, it's certainly not easy to create a unique theme for your forum as i've found on my forum. But hey, it's a forum, we all have our opinions.

You think CSS is difficult? Try working with the only method of theme switching available for this board software. You'll probably end up with a design that looks like a mass of rotten flesh.

Further, this has already been asked a million goddamn times, and shot down a million goddamn times. Go die in a fire.

ETA: Oh, and the W3C specifically warns against dynamic CSS in general, (I.e. allowing themes to be changed at will.) the general idea of it being "it will screw your website up. Bad." CSS isn't meant to do that, and if you try to hack it to do that you usually get bad results sooner or later. You're essentially asking the admins to screw over the site because shinies. Even though they've already done it once, paid the price, and learned their lesson.
