This was so tough, was tempted to go with Lava Reef but I went with Sky Sanctuary instead, the boss fight against Mecha Sonic is pretty rockin'.

My favorite was angel island zone. I have sonic classic collection on ds for my 3ds which has sonic 3, which I love playing on the angel island zone everytime I start over from beating it. :D

was tough, but i really like Lava reefs music, and the epic fight with knuckles, plus all the drama goes down on that stage :-)

Flying Battery. Music is awesome, and the level is very intense and fast paced in comparison to the others.

Mushroom Hill. It's the only level i like. The rest are ok and below. I like Sonic 2 and I'm not terrible in Classic games.
