All the moral themes were reduced to "good cops vs evil Kira" to avoid controversy and the outcomes of nearly every major plot point was determined by either a deus ex machina or a logical impossibility, simply put, the characters were smarter than the writer could handle. And the second half of the series, was just complete garbage.

I enjoyed it, though I'm halfway through the series. The show establishes the rules for the use of the Death Note, and keeps to that logic while having some fun with it, all the while there's a wicked game of cat-and-mouse with Kira and the cops which keeps me on edge.
