Although Shigeru Miyamoto is still the director of the Mario series in most cases, (With the exeption of Super Mario Bros. 2) they had to make changes so that it would fit within todays culture and the series' target audience. Because most views about video games have changed dramatically, they had to make the changes so that no parents would have problems with it.

Birdo is Yoshi's girlfriend, atleast, in my point of view.

I'd rather it be a she, now that it tends to be known as Yoshi's lover...
It would just... be... weird... if it was considered a he...

Then again, Mario goes around eating mushrooms... so I guess Mario just does allot of... weird stuff...

Well since I saw it mentioned somewhere that Birdo's a guy, that's now what I believe. I mean if I have to refer to him now, I'd use he, not she.
