Speed platforming is what made the series what it is. Trying different styles of play is what drove it into the ground.

Usually I play several different games in short bursts each, recently playing Prince of Persia one day and Overlord the next. I know it's not quite consistent.
Anyway, there's a place for fighting and a place for platforming, and for Sonic I'd say it's about platforming (if anything, a game based around Knuckles would be better suited for fighting).

Though I don't mind a small amount of combat within the gameplay, I mostly prefer a mix between speed and platforming.
