I have to agree. Colors for topics doesn't seem to make much sense IMO aside from just to give text different looks. Eliminate them.

I see no reason to eliminate them. If you think they should go, provide more reasons. As of now, all I see for reasoning is nobody uses it. Not exactly a good reason.
