It's certainly a surprise that, given the stark differences between Sonic and Mario and their rivalry, Sonic was inspired by Mario. Talk about creating your own competition.

Fair point. I think that Batman was a version of superman who had bat-like characteristics, and Spider-Man was just Superman who could climb walls. It's hard to find true originality these days.
