Idea to satisfy everyone:
Go to the ACP's Chatbox config page.
Activate Chatbox: Yes
Chatbox Display: Do not display
By doing this, the chatbox is hidden from the main forum screen, and there's a little link ("Join Chat") at the bottom of the page (above the footer) that'll take you to a full-screen version of the chatbox.
So you won't have to worry about the aesthetic inconsistencies (not to mention that it won't take up any space), and the people who still want to use the chatbox, can use it.
