If 18 is the age when we legally must take the responsibilities of adults, it should also be the age when we gain the privileges of adults. If you think 18 is too young for those privileges, then it's too young for the responsibilities as well. It's not just about drinking, it's about consistency.

I'm torn.

On one hand, if you're old enough to go to war and have sex you should be old enough to do just about anything else.

On the other, we have enough drunk drivers as it is and, if the kids in my neighborhood are a good example, we don't want them drinking and driving.

Has anyone else thought of issuing the death penalty for all crimes, whether it be murder or littering? It may seem crazy, but think of how fast and low the crime rate for the country would hit rock bottom, if it was enforced hardcore.

Back on topic, a state senator mentioned the death penalty for littering in a joking manner. I think his thinking is valid, but we as a society would never see that law anyway.

Governments have done that before, they were all killed by their people, often very brutally, and in public.

Well, we natural selection needs to occur somehow. But seriously, does that mean you believe all of the responsibilities of being an adult should not be imposed until 21 as well? Personally don't care about alcohol in the slightest, but I care about the consistency between privilege and responsibility.

No...just alchohol. If you want to join the armed forces or whatever at 18, then so be it, but I don't think many 18 year olds can comprehend the power of alchohol.

Not rights, responsibilities, like being charged as an adult in court or getting drafted into the army. The rights and responsibilities need to be consistent, if 18 is too young to drink, it should also be too young for any of the responsibilities of adulthood.

It's pretty unfair now, but it used to be a matter of civil rights, back when the age for being drafted was younger than the age for voting.

Consistency doesn't and shouldn't have anything to do with this. What if an eight year old shoots and kills aneighbor for whatever reason, should he not be tried as an adult because he/she's 18?


You are a legal adult in the United States when you turn 18--but it is a sicentifically proven fact that the descision making part of the brain is not fully developed at this point in life, and alchohol simply hinders the descision making process, leading to some dangerous effects.
