Exactly. This is called balance. Something Sonic Team seems to have forgotten along with patience and quality work as seen in Sonic Heroes, Shadow The Hedgehog, and partially Sonic The Hedgehog. Yes, develop him and give him a backstroy to add that extra needed layer of depth, but don't go diving to some convoluted ridiculous crap pretty much no one will ever care about anymore and make it this complex system of crossed wires. No. Give hima back story deep enough to make him more interesting overall as a character, but not so deep you can never follow it.
