Who is a better rival to Sonic?

Over the years, Sonic has had many rivals, attempting to defeat him, or rival his amazing speed.

My fav is Metal Sonic. He's been a long time rival of Sonic, and was the closest to defeating him.

I agree. Knuckles was a worthy rival back in 1994, now he's just a dumb, naive twit. Shadow is a basically a Sonic recolor that can shoot magic missiles.
