See, back in 2006 Sonic Team wasn't doing too well. They had a few hits before, but they were small time. And aside from Sonic Riders, it had been a few years since they had a Sonic game released. But at last they were working on a big one, one to redefine the franchise, Sonic 06. However, two things happened during production: Sonic Team began working on the Hedgehog Engine, and Yuji Naka (and several others I've heard) left the team to form Prope. Because of these two actions, the game was doomed to fail, and did so. To this day it stands as a mockery, and a regret for the franchise and Sega in general.
But this fall was necessary, for it kick-started Neo Sonic Team, a new with new ambition and talent, and they managed to wow the world with their new games. Secret Rings had much praise, Sonic Unleashed (codenamed Sonic Adventure 3) was the turn of the franchise, and the series continued to impress fans once again.
What caused the team to fail has been eradicated, and now Sonic Team is on the rise. If they make Sonic Adventure 3, it can very well be the greatest Sonic game of all time.
