I think SEGA should have a Days of Future Past type of game in their Sonic franchise, one which joins the classics' gameplay and events with the story telling scope of modern games, and leaves the franchise open to a new continuity, and whose name isn't Generations.
Perhaps this time they should bet in Parallel Universes instead of Time Travel, and allow the classic Sonic games' bad endings to become a reality within the same time frame, which means that after Sonic the Hedgehog's bad ending, Eggman would be looking for the 7th emerald. Or use Sonic CD's other ending to kickstart another continuity... You know the drill.
In the end, all those untied games would be explained with the fact that most of them were parallel universes, which could be taking place either at the same time, before or after.
